Papers, 1934-1986.

Papers consist of articles, addresses, biographical notes, news clippings, reports, and miscellaneous printed materials concerning his work with the Ethical Culture Movement and with several social welfare organizations. Included are mention of his work with Roger Baldwin to secure workers' rights and civil rights for minority groups; the American Civil Liberties Union; the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People; the establishment of the Society's Work Camps for Democracy and Encampment for Citizenship to promote social justice and condemn fascism; and the founding of the Citizens Committee for Harlem in 1941 to promote racial integration and fair housing. Also included are transcripts of radio addresses for the Society, 1944-1953.

Roger Nash Baldwin (January 21, 1884 – August 26, 1981) was one of the founders of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). He served as executive director of the ACLU until 1950. Many of the ACLU's original landmark cases took place under his direction, including the Scopes Trial, the Sacco and Vanzetti murder trial, and its challenge to the ban on James Joyce's Ulysses.
